Wrinkles are lines or creases formed on your skin as part of your body’s aging process. They appear as folds, creases or ridges and mostly found on the face, neck, arms, or anywhere in the body. You may be more at risk of getting wrinkles earlier in life if your skin is frequently exposed to the sun, you smoke cigarettes and your body loses collagen that provides your skin elasticity and support.

How Wrinkles are Formed?

Wrinkles are formed when skin cells divide more slowly, and the middle layer of your skin — the dermis — begins to thin. The dermis has a network of elastin and collagen fibers, which offer support and elasticity. As this network loosens and unravels with time, depressions form on your skin’s surface.

Causes of Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Slow skin cell production as we age leads to the thinning of our skin, thus losing the elastin and collagen fibres to offer support and elasticity.

Habitual facial expressions like smiling, frowning and squinting coupled with gravity contribute the formation of wrinkles.

Excessive exposure to UV rays from the sun can lead to photoaging which causes collagen fibres to break down and production of abnormal elastin.

Smoking causes a reduction in the production of new collagen, resulting in development of wrinkles.

Airborne pollutants can cause your body’s collagen to break down, thus losing support and wrinkles are formed.
