What is Fractional CO2 Laser?
Fractional CO2 laser is a treatment technique that is used for resurfacing skin as opposed to other resurfacing techniques like ablative laser or a chemical peel. The aim of the treatment is to aid in reducing irregularities in skin structure and texture such as wrinkles, fine lines, spots caused by sun damage, uneven coloration and scarring for acne. This treatment provides faster healing time when compared to ablative procedures.

Procedure
As the name suggests, fractional CO2 laser uses CO2 lasers to penetrate deep into the skin to promote skin healing while not causing damage to the upper layer of the skin called the epidermis. A fractional laser produces microbeams that creates thousand of very tiny columns that penetrate the outer layer of the skin epidermis through to the deeper layers of the dermis.
These columns of heat damages the skin inside it and this triggers the healthy skin surrounding the columns to start the repair process by the body’s own healing mechanism. The skin heals from below and replaces the damaged skin above resulting in an improved complexion. The result is a more regular textured and tighter looking skin. This is opposed to ablative lasers that damage the epidermis to induce healing.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
During the first 24 hours after treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned. Ice packs/frozen peas are used 5-10 minutes per hour for the first 5-6 hours after the treatment.
Your skin will peel for 2-7 days and will be pink for 3 to 6 weeks. This healing all depends on how deep your treatment is. After a week or so, you can wear make-up to cover the pink. Rarely, bruising may develop, which can take up to two weeks to resolve. Allow 2-4 weeks for weddings, reunions, family pictures, etc just to be safe. Allow longer for body sites like arms or legs.
The number depends on the extent of your sun damage, scarring or wrinkles, and on how much downtime you can accept. This may come after detailed consultation by doctor.
Due to it being an ABLATIVE laser, topical anaesthetic cream will be applied before the procedure. Take note that even though this cream is applied, there can still be some pain experienced during the procedure especially the deeper the lesion.
Thanks to the fractional technology used during the procedure, healthy tissues underneath the skin can still be found just in between the microthermal zones where heat was applied. These healthy tissues are able to provide the cells and proteins required to quickly heal the skin.
As a result, patients only have to undergo shorter recovery periods—lasting for 5 to 7 days.
